Holes

Holes

Hole 1 - Fosterton - 265yds, par 4
The opening hole is short but by no means easy.
A sharp dog-leg to the right requires a well shaped opening shot if an early birdie is what you're after but be weary of the bunkers on top of the mound. Too far left on this hole can leave you in a lot of trouble so avoid going to long off the tee. The approach is tricky as the green is guarded by a mound on the right and a back pin position requires a very attacking approach.

Hole 2 - Railway - 334yds, par 4
This hole can be played 2 ways. A driver of the tee will leave a wedge or short iron into the green however a safer option would be to hit a 3 wood or long iron as the fairway narrows. Stay clear of the left to avoid angry train drivers! But too far right and your ball is wet! The green is long but narrow, and elevated. Avoid going right as this will leave a tough 3rd, aiming a touch to the left is recommended as the bank to the side of the green will favor you.

Hole 3 - Growler - 160yds, par 3
Definitely Cluny's signature hole!
A mid iron is required for this hole on a calm day, when its windy its length can be a bit deceiving. To avoid a large score here make sure you're not short as a burn runs between tee and green. The green is a small target but if found on approach can result in a short birdie putt.
A par here is very acceptable!

Hole 4 - Cottages - 152yds, par 3
This hole plays slightly longer than its yardage as it is uphill.
Again a mid-iron is required. The left side of the green is protected by a deep bunker so often the safe player is rewarded here. Too far left or right can result in finding the deep rough. Short or long on this hole is fine but leaves a tricky 2nd!

Hole 5 - Road Hole - 290yds, par 4
This hole plays uphill but can be reached with a driver from the tee by the longer players out there. A brave line is required however, a slight pull or draw to the left will result in going out of bounds! The safe shot is to hit 3 or utility wood to the top of the hill, the fairway is wide here. The green is long but narrow so an accurate 2nd is required. Once on the green any ball above the pin will result in a downhill putt, therefore short is good on this testing hole.

Hole 6 - Larches - 176yds, par 3
Once you've climbed to the 6th tee you will find yourself at the most northern part of the course.
A long iron is needed for your 1st here. No danger in being short here, but too long can mean going out of bounds. A wide bunker rests on the right side whilst thick roughs looms by the left. The green however is a big target and very flat. A good approach shot is rewarded with an easy chip or putt.

Hole 7 - Water Hole - 454yds, par 4
The 7th hole at Cluny will either make or break you scorecard!
It is the hardest hole on the course and a challenge to any golfer. The wind often comes off the right here so be aware of this as too far left and you out! Longer players can go over the 2 bunkers down the left of the fairway to leave a mid to long iron in for your 2nd. Shorter players should stay to the right to avoid a sandy 2nd.
Its not called "Water Hole" for nothing, once over the hill you will be confronted with a large pond which protects the right hand side of the green. There is a large lay-up area which can be used but this means that making a par is much more difficult also being to safe on you 2nd shot can however result in going out of bounds on the left. A brave shot can be rewarded if your ball has the legs to clear the pond. If not your swimming!
A par here is as good as a birdie!

Hole 8 - River Ore - 285yds, par 4
From the tee the 1st shot is blind. The fairway does open up down the right but again be well aware of the burn. Aiming just right of the road on the left is a very attacking line and makes this green driveable in 1! A wedge is all that is required for your 2nd. The green, like many, is long but narrow so accuracy is the key here. The green does slop towards the burn here, although it is sometimes not clear to see, so make sure you consider this when putting.

Hole 9 - Clubhouse - 196yds, par3
The closing hole is a long par 3 which dog-legs to the left. A long iron or even a wood is needed for the 1st. If the pin is tucked up the far end of the green it is not visible from the tee. In this instance going over the small trees in front is required so ensure you get enough height on the ball! No bunkers on this hole, but thick rough to the left and small trees to the right make it just as difficult. If you short of the flag for your 2nd make sure you give your 2nd enough "wellie" to reach the flag as the green is on a uphill slop!
